Book Review: Fade to Black by Jeffrey Wilson
Fade To Black
Published by Journalstone Publishing
Reviewed by Laura Hartman
Fade To Black pulls the reader into a life and death gun battle between six Marines that were separated from their platoon and an unknown number of insurgents in Fallujah, Iraq on the first page. Bullets fly and men die. One of the sniper's bullets finds Sargent Casey Stillman, critically wounding him as he tries to save his fellow Marines.
He fades from consciousness only to wake up screaming. He isn't dying in the hot, sandy street, but falling out of the bed he is sleeping in with his wife, Pam. The sounds, smells and horror of Fallujah slowly fade as he realizes he is home with his wife and his baby daughter is sleeping down the hall. He is not a Marine Sargent; he is a high school science teacher, Jack.
Jack's horrible nightmare is so real he cannot stop thinking about it. His life feels somehow off kilter, familiar things seem foreign to him as he tries to make it through his workday.
His nightmares increase and Jack begins to think he is crazy. He seeks help from his family doctor, who sends him to a therapist. Pam stands by him, surprisingly calm during his struggle to grasp reality. Things get worse. He starts seeing the Marines killed in his dreams when he is awake. He knows facts about the men who died in Fallujah as if he really was their Sargent. How could he be Casey Stillman, when he was never in the military? Is he Casey or is he Jack?
Jeffrey Wilson's third novel is a nail-biting, heart-stopping, gripping story told with such detail the reader is grabbed by emotion from the first page to the last. This book appeals to many different tastes on numerous levels. It is a war story - but not typical. It is a story about the love a man has for his wife and daughter - but not a love story. It is a mystery - just who is the main character? Is it Jack or is it Casey?
Wilson served in Iraq as a Marine combat surgeon. He brings the realities and horrors of war to the pages of his book with sounds, smells and images. Layered with emotions Fade To Black is an amazing, sometimes uncomfortable ride, but one you won't want to put down until the last page is read.

About Fade to Black:
Protagonist Jack Keller is a young man caught between two terrifying worlds. In one world, he is Marine Sergeant Casey Stillman. Locked in combat in the streets of Fallujah, Iraq, he is lying next to his dead and dying friends, bleeding in the street--until he wakes up at home, in bed with his wife. In this other world, Jack is Jack Keller, a high school science teacher, husband, and devoted father to his little girl. But the nightmares of war continue to haunt him--and they're vivid, they're horrifying, and they're way too real. When news of killed Marines in Fallujah surface, Jack realizes he knows far more about these men then he should. Could it be coincidence, or something else? When the dead Marines begin visiting him while he is awake, Jack realizes that he is in serious trouble. Faced with the possibility of losing his mind--or worse still, that these nightmares aren't nightmares at all, but are real--Jack knows he must somehow find a way to bridge the two realities and fight his way back to save his wife and his little girl.
From its unforgettable opening to its final, chilling conclusion, Fade to Black is an extraordinary thriller that will stay with readers long after the final page is turned. The novel is already getting some attention from readers and others:
"A brilliant combination of war novel and supernatural thriller. This book could only have been written by an author who knows firsthand the blood, sweat, dust, and terror of combat."
-Tom Young, author of The Mullah's Storm, Silent Enemy, and The Renegades
"Wilson weaves terror and tenderness into this harrowing, supernatural tale of one man's perfect life turned upside-down by the horrors and sacrifices of military combat."
-Brian Andrews, Author of The Calypso Directive, 2012 USA BEST BOOK Awards Finalist
"Wilson just keeps getting better and better. FADE TO BLACK is a death-limbo drama that plays masterfully with melancholy notes of heartbreak backed by the roaring horrors of modern warfare. In the last fifty pages, you'll bite off every fingernail waiting to see the final outcome!"
-Benjamin Kane Ethridge, Bram Stoker Award winning author of BLACK & ORANGE and NIGHTMARE BALLAD.
"Received as an Early Reviewers book. All I can say is Wow!!!. This book gripped me from the beginning and would not let go. I finished it in a matter of hours only taking a short break for some sleep. It still haunts my thoughts, it gives you a lot to think about: love, death, heroism among other things. I grew up in a military family and am married a man who spent 20 years in the Navy...looking at this book from a military wife's perspective I find it to be a love story. Read it and you will understand. It took me a while to figure it out: first I thought the horror of war, and death seemed the themes, but after consideration I understand it is about love. Definitely not my usual reading genre, I don't know why I requested it. When I first received it I put off reading it because it just didn't look that interesting. Now I am very glad I forced myself to pick it up. (Reconsider the cover art) I am not going to tell to much about what the book is about. To much could easily give the story away and it is something a person needs to experience for themselves. I will say that if vivid descriptions war bother you, you may want to think twice before picking up this book but it is no worse than the opening of the movie Saving Private Ryan... and only for short periods of a book well worth reading. Thank-you to Jeffery Wilson for writing it...you have a wonderful talent. 5 STARS"

Here is the summary of Jeffrey's newest novel:
Jack is a young man caught between two terrifying worlds. In one, he is Marine Sergeant Casey Stillman, leading his squad during the battle of Fallujah in Iraq. He and his men are ambushed and now, mortally wounded, he lays bleeding in the street beside his dead and dying friends until he wakes up, home in bed with his wife. Here, he is Jack, a high school science teacher, husband, and devoted father to his little baby girl. The problem is, the nightmares keep coming back, and to Jack, they feel in many ways more real than his life at home with his family. When news reports start coming in about killed and wounded Marines in Fallujah, Jack realizes he knows far more about these men then he should. But, when the dead Marines from his nightmares start visiting him even when he is awake, Jack knows he has a much bigger problem. He must face the possibility that he is losing his mind, or the far more terrifying possibility that both worlds are real and that he must somehow find a way between the two worlds so that he can save his friends and find his way back to his life with his wife and baby girl.

THE DONORS is Now Available
Here's what people are saying:
"With its tight muscular prose and sharp dialogue, THE DONORS will keep you hooked from the opening page. Wilson has written a novel packed with surprises and suspense, and drawn characters whose every pang the reader feels. This is a novel full of visceral, intense moments. It will keep you holding on until the brilliant end."
-Richard Godwin, Award winning author of MR. GLAMOUR and APOSTLE RISING
"Jeffrey Wilson can spin a chilling scene with the best of them, but it's his characters that make his writing so horrifying. These are real people and real families, and Wilson forces us to walk with them on a terrifying journey into the blackest shadows where creatures of primordial evil feed on their darkest fears."
-Brett J. Talley, Bram Stoker nominated author of THAT WHICH SHOULD NOT BE and THE VOID
"Jeffrey Wilson, the cross genre genius and its likely future high priest, has released THE DONORS on the heels of his successful first novel THE TRAITEUR'S RING... His skilled plotting, muscular prose, tight dialogue, and gift for making his readers complicit in character development have inspired praise across the spectrum of his peers... A breathless ride."

Thanks to Everyone Who Helped Make Our Navy SEAL Foundation Fundraiser a Success
February is over and we want to thank everyone who helped spread the word about our fundraiser. It will take some time to determine the sales (many sellers report quarterly) but we do know that we raised some money for a terrific cause. Publisher Chris Payne is a good friend and a true patriot for helping make this project happen. Thanks so much to the readers who bought books and the friends and partners who helped get the work out.
Thanks especially to Troy Lapetina. Troy is a friend and colleague who is also the president and CEO of Nathan Group, LLC which owns and manufactures the Rapid Access Tool, which Troy invented. This is an amazing device that truly saves lives, used by Police, Fire Departments, and a myriad of government Agencies to allow incredibly rapid breaching of armoured vehicles. Troy generously donated $50 on each device sold in February to the Navy SEAL Foundation to help our fundraising effort. Visit Troy at www.RapidAccessTool.com to thank him and learn more about his device.
Thanks also to the entrepreuers and former operators at Forged Clothing, the team at NavySEALS.com, Writers Benjanmin Kane Ethridge (www.bkethridge.com), Lincoln Crisler (http://lincolncrisler.info/), Rocky Wood (president of the Horror Writer's Association), and Marliss Melton (www.marlissmelton.com), all of whom helped tremendously by spreading the word about our project.
And most importantly, thanks to the men and women of Naval Special Warfare for their dedication and sacfrifice and to the families who they sometimes leave behind.
Jeffrey Wilson and Publisher Chistopher C. Payne Announce a Fundraiser for the Navy SEAL Foundation
In August of 2011, the Navy SEAL community suffered its worst single day loss of life in its more than 50-year history when a team of SEALs aboard a special operations helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan . Like everyone with ties to Naval Special Warfare, writer Jeffrey Wilson was deeply affected by this event. Everyone in the community is connected in some way to the families devastated by this tragedy.
Together with JournalStone Publisher Christopher C. Payne, Jeffrey has set out to raise money for the Navy SEAL Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides direct support for wounded SEALs and others from the Special Warfare community, and provides support and comfort for the families left behind when SEALs are killed in the line of duty.
For the entire month of February, Jeffrey Wilson will donate 100% of his royalties from his novel THE TRAITEUR'S RING to the Navy SEAL foundation. In an incredible show of generosity and support, Chris Payne at JournalStone has agreed to not only match this donation, but in fact donate 100% of JournalStones' February profits from this book.

HELP US GIVE BACK TO AMERICA'S HEROES
The events of August 6th, with the loss of a special operations Helicopter to insurgent enemy fire and the loss of 30 Navy SEALs and support personnel was, and continues to be, a very difficult thing for folks with ties to the NSW community. As a result of a number of emails asking for ways to help, Jeffrey wrote an article that is coming out in a handful of newspapers around the country about how to give something back to the our nation's warriors and their families. We are posting the links to the article and the links to the organizations that he discussed. If you are looking for a way to help, any of these would be a great place to start. Needless to say, Jeffrey has a particular fondness for the Navy SEAL Foundation.
